BEDDOE, Alan Brookman O.B.E.

 

Alan was born in Ottawa in 1893. He studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After spending time perfecting his artistic talent he worked in the field of commercial art and also continued to study at the Art Students’ League in New York under DuMond and Bridgman and received help in Canada from Ernest Fosbery and George McElroy. His knowledge of heraldic was employed to design many emblems for the commissioned ships of the Royal Canadian Navy.

 

He supervised the illuminations for the Book of Remembrance for World War II, the South African War and the campaign in Korea. For his work on these books he received the O.B.E. and the Allied Arts Medal awarded by the Royal Architectural Institute.

 

Alan, besides being a talented artist, was also the first President of the Heraldry Society of Canada. His awards include: OC, OBE, O. St. John, FHSC.

 

Alan Beddoe died in 1975.
