STONE, THOMAS ALBERT OSA

Tom Stone was born in Herefordshire, England in 1894, immigrating to Toronto, Canada in 1914. Tom studied art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and in 1925 was awarded the Governor General’s Award for being that year’s outstanding student at the OCA. Tom furthered his studies under Andre L’Hote at his Academie in Paris, France and at the Academie Moderne also in Paris.

Tom became a member and director of the Ontario Society of Artists in the 1930’s and continued actively painting until his death in 1978.

Tom’s paintings are in many collections world wide. It was said that he showed “great skill in the handling of snow especially with the impressions of the gleam of waning sunlight on it.”

In 1929 Tom had the first one-man show ever to be held in the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario).

Tom Stone died in 1978.
