A Note of Interest: Geneva Jackson and her sister Naomi Jackson both painted in the style of their famous uncle A.Y. Jackson. They often adopted to create their paintings on the more common size of panel used by Uncle A.Y., which was 11.5 inch by 13.5 inch. Between the two sisters, it's noted that Geneva had the more refined eye and also chose subject matter that was near and dear to the places that she loved to frequent. The painting displayed here can be cosidered one of her finest St.Sauveur settings.
Geneva's sister, Naomi was also an accomplished writer and translator, publishing a number of works that focused on the life and career of their uncle A.Y. Jackson. Widely respected for her scholarship and philanthropy, Naomi Jackson Groves was awarded the Order of Canada in 1993. As well as being an artist, Groves was a distinguished lawyer, and lecturer at McMaster University.
Geneva was born in Montreal in 1916, the second daughter of Henry A.C. Jackson and Coralie Adair Jackson. She studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School on a two-year sculpture scholarship; the Berkshire Summer School of Art and the Banff School of Art.
Her career in art education included: Supervisor of Art for Schools, Lachine, Que.; Art Teacher at Montreal West High School; she assisted with Saturday Morning Classes at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under noted artist Arthur Lismer and other colleagues.
Geneva often sketched with 'Beaver Hall Group' member, Henrietta Mabel May and also received instruction from her famous uncle A.Y. Jackson.
Her uncle was a particularly strong influence on her artistic style. His perception of the Canadian environment is evident in Geneva's paintings. She painted primarily in Quebec around Baie St. Paul, St.John Port Joli, Christieville and when in Ontario she also painted with her sister Dr.Naomi Jackson Groves. On occasions while on a Northwestern trips, Geneva also sketched and painted in Alberta, Baffin Island and the Yukon.
Geneva is represented in private collections across Canada, U.S.A., England, Scotland, Denmark and Australia.
