Michael was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1923. He studied painting and printmaking at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, and King Alfred's College, Winchester in the UK. He worked for the Arts Council an Chomhairle Ealaíon and for NCAD. He was a founding member of Independent Artists, a committee member of Project Arts Centre and of the Black Church Print Studio, both in Dublin.
Byrne's paintings are concerned with the streets and subjects of Dublin. These images are then developed into a series of subtle motifs that explore the idea of memory as a shape. He published limited editions of lithographs and silk screen prints.
He exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad, and his paintings and prints are in the Arts Council of Ireland, the National Self Portrait Collection, the University of Limerick and private and public collections worldwide. His solo exhibitions include Inglewood Library Gallery in Los Angeles; Project Arts Centre and Setanta Gallery, Dublin.
Michael passed away in 1989.
